DUI checkpoints are a controversial method used to deter drunk driving still used today, in spite of their statistical ineffectiveness in relation to other methods. When first established, they were the subject of protesters citing racial profiling, discrimination, and violation of constitutional rights. Since then some changes have been made to determine a set of guidelines to be followed.

Many argue the unconstitutionality of such checkpoints, and the cases have reached as far as the Supreme Courtstatesillegal immigrants
